Marinara Sauce

Serves: Makes 1 cup/4 servings

Ingredients:

  • 1 tbsp olive oil

  • 1/6 cup finely-diced white onion

  • 2 cloves garlic, pressed or finely-minced

  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes

  • 1 (14-ounce) can crushed tomatoes

  • 1 tsp white sugar

  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano

  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt

  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly-cracked black pepper

  • 2 large sprigs of fresh basil

Directions:

Heat olive oil in a large saucepan over medium-high heat. Add onion and sauté for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until combined. Add garlic and crushed red pepper flakes and sauté for 1-2 minutes, stirring frequently, until combined.

Add the tomatoes, sugar, oregano, salt and black pepper, and stir to combine. Stir in the fresh basil sprigs. Continue cooking the sauce until it reaches a simmer. Then reduce the heat to medium-low, cover and continue to simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. When finished, remove & discard the basil sprigs. Taste and season with salt and pepper as needed.
